Stewart Hopewell attained his Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science and minored in Art and Art History at the College of William and Mary in historic Williamsburg, Virginia. He then went on to earn his Master of Fine Arts at Florida State University’s Conservatory of Motion Picture Arts in Tallahassee, Florida.

While at FSU, he directed four films, including MISFORTUNE (2002) and 3AM (2003), one of the five coveted thesis films.

MISFORTUNE (super 16mm / 8 minutes / thriller) is about a man who receives a cry for help from his waitress while dining at a questionable Chinese restaurant. MISFORTUNE rose through the ranks of Kevin Spacey’s Triggerstreet.com Film Festival and was awarded the top prize at the competition’s screening at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival in Park City. Thanks to his success in the festival, Hopewell and his work were featured in the pages of VANITY FAIR (March 2004)

3AM (35mm / 22 minutes / psychological horror) is about a third shift cremation attendant who sexually molests a young woman’s body that he’s about to burn. Her spirit then comes back in the middle of the night to exact her revenge. 3AM has had wide success as it’s made the festival rounds. It won Best Student Film at Screamfest LA, the prestigious ASC Heritage Award for cinematography, and a Student Emmy among many other awards. Thanks to its accolades, 3AM was featured in the AMERICAN CINEMATOGRAPHER magazine as an example of cutting edge student work.

Along with his co-writer, Tim Long, Hopewell has written three feature scripts REVENANTS, NIGHTMARES, and FAITHLESS. Hopewell is currently working on several writing projects of his own including a feature based on his firsthand experience of being kidnapped in Brazil.

He also recently completed a polish of DESOLATE for Stan Winston Productions and Candy Heart Productions.

On the directing front, Hopewell is currently very excited to be directing the feature film FAITHLESS for After Dark Films and their 8 Films To Die For genre film festival. The film is currently in production in Romania and will hit theaters across the USA this November. Mark your calenders.

Hopewell is also attached to direct DESOLATE for Stan Winston Productions and Candy Heart Productions. DESOLATE is a psychological horror about one man’s journey to hell and the evil creatures that lurk in the shadows along the way.

For fun, Hopewell also directed JACK AND KRISTIN, a short mobisode for Sam Raimi’s Ghosthouse Pictures in late 2005, and LINT, a short created in seven days from conception to dvd in early 2007.
